Essential Oil Basics

EssentialOilsEssential oils have become a new health trend and you’ve probably heard more about them in the last few years than ever before. But essential oils are nothing new – in fact they’re one of the oldest forms of medicine.

Essential oils are oils that are extracted from plants. This is different than an extract that uses alcohol to extract some of the flavor or aroma of a plant. Instead, this is the actual oil that is within the plant after it’s pressed.

These oils are heavily concentrated in plant chemicals and many of them have medicinal properties. In fact, more and more people are turning to essential oils to improve health issues and enjoy overall wellness.

Essential oils can be used in a variety of ways. They can be added to a diffuser in order to provide aromatherapy to a specific area. They can also be added to a cotton ball or washcloth in order to be inhaled by someone nearby for aromatherapy.

Essential oils can also be applied directly to your skin. Your skin actually absorbs the oils and the chemicals can enter your bloodstream and be carried throughout your entire body. Some can be applied without being diluted while others need to be diluted with a carrier oil such as olive oil, grape seed oil, or coconut oil.

Diluting oils helps to keep them from being too intense and causing sensitivity to the skin. This is especially important for oils that are known to be strong such as peppermint oil and for babies and children.

Many people also apply essential oils to the soles of the feet. This area tends to work well because the skin is a bit thicker and less sensitive. You also have a large number of pores on the bottoms of your feet (which is why they can be so sweaty!) and these pores provide channels for the essential oils to be absorbed and circulated.

Some people also choose to take essential oils internally. This is a practice that should be performed with caution and only when you’re certain that the oil is pure and won’t be harmful to you.

Essential oils can be used to treat everything from a sinus infection to a skin rash. Many people use essential oils instead of over the counter medications to deal with minor illnesses and to improve their energy levels and overall health.

Essential oils can be very effective when used properly. It’s important that you educate yourself before using them so that you can do so safely.
